Plant type: Annual or tender perennial grown as an annual
Height x width: Up to 1 foot tall
Growth habit: Spreading
Foliage: Low growing (upright) or vining (depending on cultivar) with leaves that are opposite, oblong to oblong-ovate, 2 to 4 inches long
Flowers: Clusters of dainty, brightly-colored flowers that tend to be in flattened panicles or clusters and bloom continuously if deadheaded. Some species produce spiked inflorescences
Culture: Full sun, well-drained soil. Verbena hybrids usually grow best in spring’s cooler temperatures. They may cease blooming during prolonged heat and drought, then return to flowering when the weather cools. Many verbenas, however, are very drought tolerant with continuous flowering during the summer
Pests and problems: Spider mites
Uses: Ground cover, in beds, edging, rock garden, window boxes, hanging baskets. Attract butterflies.
Propagation: Seed
Cultivars and Related Species: Superbena Lilac Blue.
V. bonarienses, tall or Peruvian verbena, is a marginally hardy perennial in our area; 2 to 3 feet tall, slender stemmed, a “see-through” plant. It reseeds prolifically. V. canadensis
