Notes:
Growth habit: Upright
Foliage: Alternate, linear-lanceolate, 2 to 6 inches long, usually serrate
Flowers: Yellow, reddish-brown or orange daisy-like flowers. Wedge shaped ray florets are three-lobed at the tips. Disc florets form a button-like a cone. Blooms June through October, if deadheaded.
Culture: Prefers full sun and well-drained soil but will tolerate most conditions except dry soil. Many of the H. autumnale cultivars are tall and require staking.
Pests and problems: Powdery mildew
Uses: Border or cut flower for tall varieties, bedding plant for shorter cultivars.
Propagation: Division (every 3rd year), seed
Cultivars: ‘Mardi Gras’, shown here, has yellow petals splashed with orange around a dark brown central cone. It is 3 to 4 feet tall.
