Notes:
Height x width: 2 feet tall and wide
Growth habit: Rounded clump
Foliage: Alternate, simple, ovate, entire, and 4 inches long. Dark green foliage with distinctive brick-red or ivory-yellow variegation, often in a v-shape across the center of the leaf
Flowers: Small brownish flowers are borne in thin spikes – not showy
Culture: Partly shaded area with abundant moisture. Protedt from wind, which may damage delicate leaves
Pests and problems: Not tolerant of summer heat or drought
Uses: Used as a tall groundcover, or massed or edging in shaded borders.
Propagation: Division in fall or spring
Cultivars:
‘Painters Pallette’ – a reddish V runs across the center of the leaf. The leaf itself is creamy white with areas of green and pink, as seen here.
‘Red Dragon’ - plum-colored leaves are marked with chevrons in shades of red, mint green, silver, and burgundy. Individual leaves can measure 4 to 6 inches long. Foliage colors can vary with the temperature, and sometimes turn greener in the hotter months.
