Description: Frost-hardy mounding perennial that was once highly popular but is not often seen in today’s gardens.
Origin: Southern United States.
Height x width: 1.5 feet tall.
Growth habit: A 1- to 2-foot mound about 1.5 feet wide.
Foliage: a rosette of narrow, alternate, evergreen leaves that are about 8 inches long. Upper leaves are clasping while lower leaves are spiny-toothed.
Flowers: Lavender or white blooms in late summer.
Culture: Full sun or part shade, well-drained soil.
Uses: Perennial border, cut flowers.
Other facts of interest: This is the only plant in the Stokesia genus, named after Englishman Dr. Jonathan Stokes, a botanical writer.
Propagation: Seed, division.
Cultivars: ‘Blue Danube’ is a popular cultivar with lavender-blue flowers (below). ‘Peachies Pick’ is more upright; also lavender blue flowers
