Notes:
Height x width: 2 to 8 inches tall and 1 foot wide.
Foliage: Prostrate or ascending, loose hairs at joints and among flowers, scattered, narrow, 1 inch long or shorter, succulent.
Flowers: Delicate pink, purple, red or yellow flowers, born singly or in branched inflorescences. Flowers of older varieties only open when the sun is shining and close at night. Blooms all summer until frost
Culture: Full sun—flowering is greatly reduced in the shade, and dry, sandy soil
Uses: Groundcover, hanging baskets, patio containers, edging, rock garden
Propagation: seed
Related species: Portulaca oleracea, common Purslane, is a sprawling plant with smooth, thick, fleshy, reddish stems. It produces single flowers sparsely although hybrid ornamental purslanes are floriferous. It is native throughout the U.S. and a well-known weed that can become a pest in gardens during hot weather. There are a number of striking ornamental cultivars of Portulaca oleracea.
Cultivars: Sundial and Sundance series tend to stay open on cloudy days as well as in sunshine. Many other Portulaca cultivars are available.
